Best Table Mountain Hiking Routes: Which Route Should You Choose?
Platteklip, India Venster, Kasteelspoort and Skeleton Gorge all reach the upper mountain — but they feel like four very different hiking days.
When guests ask me for the “best” Table Mountain route, I normally ask a few questions before answering: how fit are you, how comfortable are you with heights, do you enjoy scrambling, and how much time do you want to spend on the mountain? The best route is the one that matches the experience you actually want.
| Route | Best for | Fitness | Scrambling / exposure | Typical OA experience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platteklip Gorge | Direct classic ascent | Moderate | Low | Steep sustained climb |
| India Venster | Adventure & variety | Strong | High | Scrambling and changing views |
| Kasteelspoort | Atlantic scenery & endurance | Strong | Some mild scrambling | Long upper-mountain traverse |
| Skeleton Gorge | Forest, water & changing scenery | Strong | Ladders / boulders | Long route via Maclear’s Beacon |
Platteklip Gorge: direct and straightforward

Platteklip is the simplest of these four routes to understand: you enter the gorge and keep climbing. That does not make it easy. The stone steps are relentless and the elevation comes quickly, so it often surprises visitors who expected a casual walk.
I usually recommend it to guests who want to hike Table Mountain but would rather avoid the more exposed scrambling found on India Venster.

India Venster: the adventurous choice

India Venster has far more variety. There are steep trail sections, hands-on scrambling and exposed areas where being comfortable with heights matters. The reward is a route that keeps changing as you move around the mountain.
For active guests who want their Table Mountain hike to feel like an adventure rather than simply a climb, this is often my first suggestion.
Kasteelspoort: Atlantic views and a long mountain day

Kasteelspoort starts above Camps Bay, so the Atlantic scenery arrives almost immediately. The ascent passes the old cableway area and Diving Board before our full route continues across the upper mountain toward the Upper Cableway.
The challenge is endurance. The upper traverse winds through valleys and repeatedly rises and falls, so the day can feel much longer than a direct summit route even when the terrain is not especially technical.
Skeleton Gorge: the biggest change of scenery

Skeleton Gorge begins in Kirstenbosch beneath forest canopy beside a stream. After rain, the lower gorge can be spectacular, but wet rocks and high water also change the safety calculation. Higher up you encounter wooden ladders and a boulder-filled ravine before suddenly emerging above the trees.
One of my favourite surprises is the white sand around the reservoir. From there our longer version continues toward Maclear’s Beacon — the highest point on Table Mountain — before crossing the tabletop to the Upper Cableway.
So which one should you choose?
Choose Platteklip if you want the most direct classic ascent. Choose India Venster if you are fit, comfortable with heights and want scrambling. Choose Kasteelspoort if you want a longer Atlantic-side experience and have the endurance for a full traverse. Choose Skeleton Gorge if forest, water, ladders and dramatic changes in scenery appeal to you.
Weather can change the answer. Strong wind, heavy rain or wet rock can make one route unsuitable even when another part of the mountain remains manageable. That is why we make the final route decision around the actual conditions on the day.
